TELL IT LIKE IT WAS!

By Danielle Campbell

Img_1281 Img_1287_2 Img_1293_3 Img_1292_2Img_1295_2  Img_1286_2

Each June the LI Press Club and News 12 LI honor Hank Logeman by awarding an aspiring LI high school journalist with a scholarship.

http://www.pcli.org/index.asp

{The Hank Logeman/News 12 High School Journalism Award went to James Brierton of Smithtown High School East. The $2,000 award, funded by New 12 Long Island, honors Logeman, a longtime journalist and UPI reporter who worked out of the Mineola press room.}
Img_1290_2

Img_1291

Img_1306_3 Img_1284_2

Hank, who lived and worked on LI for most of his life, was an accomplished correspondent from another era.

Hank graduated from the University of Michigan in 1942 with a Bachelor degree in Economics In 1947 Hank moved to NYC and took a job with the Long Island Press and the L.I. Star Journal as a reporter.

1951 Hank joined UPI, United Press International, retiring in 1991 at the age of 71.

Img_1288_2

Hank covered almost every major story of his era.

He interviewed The Beatles, General MacArthur, JF Kennedy, Liz Taylor, Marilyn Monroe.

Img_1296

He covered murders and scandals to numerous to count-- Many back in the day when reporters--all male back then, simply walked into the murder scene along with the cops and detectives.

Img_1301_4

He covered no less than 10 plane crashes--including Avianca where at the age of 70--he walked several miles from the town of Oyster Bay--all the way to Cove Neck where the crash site was located.

3462634657

3462635897

3201616388

I remember giving a Hank ride back to town after we had spent close to 12 hours at the gruesome crash site.

Img_1298_5

Hank had a photographic memory--and was one of the most accurate reporters working--He was a real stickler for details--And everyday in the Press Room Hank was heard saying in his very distinctive voice--"EXACTLY how do you spell that?" He was a real whiz at details ---evident at a very young age.

Img_1304_2

He loved antique cars--- and Hank told us how at the age of five he could stand on the street corner and as the cars went by he could name every make and model--an ability he kept for as long as we all knew him.

Img_1308

Img_1285_2

He NEVER hesitated to help a young reporter.

In fact he patiently explained to me what an arraignment was when I was sent out on my first big murder case in Riverhead for 1010 WINS.

He had infinite patience and wisdom--He was a role model, not only as a journalist, but as a person.

He knew the courts and the criminal justice system like the back of his hand.

His writing was not only accurate --but beautiful.

I and many other reporters had the honor to work side by side with this great man.

Hank--was maybe 5 foot 2---always with folded paper under his arm--a cigarette draped from his mouth--and a small stub of a pencil ready to go.

Img_1311

How lucky I considered myself--to have worked with a true journalist--a man of integrity--wisdom and humor.

Img_1289 Img_1309

Img_1290_4

We all worked together in the Mineola Press Room--it was set up in the courthouse and it was where all of LI's important journalists worked--we were close to the action, the police and the politicians. {In those days Suffolk wasn't considered that news worthy}

One time I remember Hank asking me information about a story--I knew then he considered me a trusted journalist! Whenever that happened--it was a nerve-wracking honor!

Img_1283_2

Hank and his wife Laura raised their 3 children in Floral Park-- Near the end of his life Hank had been babysitting for his 3 grandchildren --they were by his side when he died.

Despite his height--Hank was one of the tallest people I ever had the pleasure of working with and knowing.

Hank taught us tenaciousness--accuracy --unbending integrity to convey the truth--and above all-he taught us to keep our sense of humor so that we could deal with the tragedies of life that bombarded us on a daily basis--- I personally thank Hank Logeman for all these gifts--

Img_1297_4

I asked Doug Geed, who also knew Hank to write his thoughts down:

Hank Logeman WAS the Mineola Press Room. It's where I and countless other young reporters learned our craft. Despite four years of college and a Bachelor of Journalism degree, I consider "Professor Logeman" one of my greatest teachers. One of my favorite pastimes would be discussing sports with Hank over a few beers. The memories of his beloved Detroit Tigers and so many other sports tales could entertain for hours. I just regret never following through on my oft-stated comment to Hank that I'd write a book with him about all the stories he had covered and people he had met. It's amazing how much territory he managed to cover by never once driving above 35 miles an hour. But his driving habits matched his journalistic skills: take your time, get it right. An outstanding journalist and a true gentleman, I've never met anyone who didn't love Hank Logeman. I'm just one person on a very long list. Thanks, Hank.

Img_1307 Img_1310

Ellen Mitchell of WCBS News radio 880, worked with Hank for over 20 years: "In looking back at the years I spent reporting out of the Mineola press room, my memories of Hank Logeman are among my most cherished. Our desks were adjacent. We sat four feet from each other on an almost daily basis and I cannot recall ever having a disagreement with the man. We became fast friends on the day we met and remained so until the day Hank died. Hank was tiny in physical stature and yet he stood heads above the rest of us when it came to journalistic integrity, writing ability and an aptitude for cutting to the heart of the story quickly and accurately.

Img_1299

He was a reporter of the old school, devoted to his craft, skilled as a communicator, tenacious about uncovering every detail and insistent that what he reported on be honest and unadorned. Hank never wrote to please an editor interested only in ratings or glaring headlines. Many of you are familiar with the Hank legends.

Img_1300_2

The man kept sheets of paper for note taking folded over so that they fit into his breast pocket. He was a formal person and sports jackets with pockets were his style. He wrote his notes in columns, between the folds of the paper and he did so with pencil stubs. I think Hank purposely ground down new pencils so as never to have one that was more than 4 inches long. When all the reporters in the room were on a conference call with the police, which was something we used to do regularly, Hank could drive us all to distraction with his insistence on minute detail. I can still hear him asking, "Officer Kohler…how do you spell that name Smith?" The man was blessed with a charming sense of humor and each day he arrived with a new joke. Hank was a raconteur and he had this incredible wealth of rich stories to share. He had been a reporter longer than any of us and as the UPI man at Kennedy Airport he had seen it all. He had personally interviewed such bigger than life luminaries as Marilyn Monroe, the Beatles and Richard Nixon.

Img_1286_3

He never went out of his way to tell people about any of this but then he'd casually mention a name as part of one of his stories…such as " I was standing on the tarmac with Paul McCartney" or " I was in the VIP lounge interviewing Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton." Time and again I suggested to Hank that he write a book about his memories. He'd shake his head and I knew he'd never do it. He was a very humble guy. Hank never lived to see the wireless, digitalized, Blackberried, instantaneous style of news reporting of today. But, he was always open to change and he would have mastered all the latest technology---maybe not easily, but he would have done it. Still, sometimes it's good to recall a man who wrote with a pencil stub on long sheets of paper, never missed a detail and never dramatized his stories. Life as it happened was drama enough and Hank told it like it was." Img_1301_5

Thanks for letting me share our memories of a beloved LI Journalist--Maybe one day we will all write the book and call it "Tell It Like It Was!"

Floral Park Parade!

FLORAL PARK CELEBRATES 100 YEARS
WITH GRAND PARADE
Img_0812Img_0811Img_0814Village20of20floral20park20flag20sm

Img_0825

Floral Park is where I spent the first five years of my life --

We lived on Violet Ave. in a two family house. I have very few memories except the I think my room was blue, we had a towering oak tree in front that I use to hide behind and try to hug.

I use to ride my trike up and down the sidewalk, and there was a vast backyard (to a five year old) where we would scrounge around in the dirt and weeds.

My sisters and I alway went to Grandma's who lived on Cherry Street--{Gram made me the best BLT's!}and my Dad would always bring a big sack of laundry.

I I remember a kid knocking me off my  bike at nursery school which was down the block and I remember getting into the biggest trouble of my life--It was my first and only brush with the law!

My sister Kathryn and I ,would scamper down the block, without anyone knowing {5 and 4 years old} and head right to the "corner store"  Then with stealth like precision--I would lift my sister up so she could grab two candy bars and away we went.

I suppose we did this enough times to try the patience of the owner---because I have this memory of  being dragged home by my hair by my poor mother, {who was 21!} screaming at us for something that sounded like "What would make you to walk down to the corner store!!!??????

{Candy I said--which resulted in another tug on the hair}

"Why would you take candy from the corner store??

{ Because we don't have any!!--"OUCH!"}

Stealing Candy!!?? I had no idea we were doing something wrong--my mother kept saying this weird word "illegal" and of course I got the brunt of it because --well--I was the one who lifted up my sister and instructed her on which chocolate bar to grab! The way my mother carried on I thought for sure I was going to be locked away forever--I remember crying in my blue room and using my tears to paint a picture on the wall because my mother left me in there for days!!! :)

I loved living in Floral Park and down the block from Gram and Gramps--{come to think of it I spent alot of time--painting pictures with my tears --standing in the corner ---in trouble there as well-}

We eventually moved--{I think it was right after they posted my picture in the Candy Store}---out to the country--Huntington, Suffolk County--{there were cows and corn there} and we were moving into a big old house with what seemed like acres of land and I was going to go to school.

Floral Park is a big part of my life because my Gram still lives there.

She is one of the most amazing women in my life--and when she asked me if I wanted to come Floral Park's 100 Year Parade Celebration of course I said YES!

The Parade captured Floral Park's character and characters! :)  They even showed off their new garbarge trucks --{Gram said "Oh look there are our new garbarge trucks!"} { My favorite picture Img_0846is the one with the guys behind the horse!}

Img_0822

Img_0824

I was telling my kids all about living in Floral Park {they were really excited as you can imagine} and about the Fourth Of July Parades and how the firemen would lets us ride on the trucks and how during one parade my friend--{gram will remember her name}--- let go of her red balloon.

As we watched it disappear--she began to cry--I promptly gave her my blue balloon--she smiled--and then let go of it as well!!!

{that memory still makes me crazy--why would she do that?? :)

I guess I realize I remember alot more than I thought--most of all the hugs--the kisses and the love that surrounded me--lucky me!!

Watch Lourdes Show THIS Weekend!

Oh Lourdes!  For Crying Out Loud!

Img_0024 Img_0020

I am in my office crying--our Lourdes show at 7pm had some what we call in the business--technical difficulties----

My editor Alvin Rueda worked so hard --he was so amazing --but sometimes, despite doing everything right----somethings may go wrong. {especially mechanical things! ugh!!!}

Alvin was so calm, so peaceful, together--I fell apart!

Like Steven McDonald says--"if you want to see God's sense of humor----Make plans!"

{Right now ---God is not doing a good job at making me laugh!}

Despite that--our half hour show will run all weekend long--every other hour or so---

So Please Please Please--if you can take a look--

It will also eventually be posted on our website as well---

I just want to thank Steven McDonald who came in today to thank the staff for all the hard work that went into getting the Lourdes story on the air.

My dear friend and colleague Marc Racenstein, another wonderful editor at News 12, reminded me how amazing it was that Steven McDonald came to News 12 despite all of his ongoing technical difficulties--that he experiences with every breath!!

When he said that it really made me think--

During his visit to the news room--Steven gave us his precious time with such graciousness--and sincerely expressed his heartfelt thanks.

Once again, despite his struggles--unbelievably ---he gave back to others.

So here I am--like a jerk---crying in my office over--"technical difficulties"!

Didn't I learn anything in Lourdes?

In fact I wrote these very words--

"Faith is believing in what you don't see--"

I have to believe and leave it in God's hands!

Thanks again for supporting this series--

"For supporting stories that not only change our lives--but change our hearts."

dc

P.S

Please Scroll down there are several postings back that are all about the Lourdes Trip and lots of pictures too!

{There are at least 50 or so people in the news room that play some kind of role in getting the segments on the air--writers/producers/editors/copy editors/directors/camera operators/graphic designers/Adam who did my hair/folks who fed us while we sat for hours in the "Lourdes" edit bay/people who shared their lunch/their encouragement/their candy kisses--{thanks Virginia!!} their smiles and their "Lourdy, Lourdy" jokes!"}

May 07, 2008

Lordy Lordy!! Oh Lourdes!!!

I have been locked up in an editing bay for--oh lets say three weeks!

Logging 18 hours of tape we shot in Lourdes --and then editing it down to three --nine minute segments with editor Alvin Rueda and Camera man Dave Liebo--{they hate me at this point} {no really they do, in fact I actually hate me--I can't stand myself driving them crazy!!}

This is me:

"no no I want to see Steven's face when he smiles--more of the kids hugging--make that longer--make that shorter--more of me--less of me--I like that shot--no I changed my mind!  take that out--can you put it back in-" and their favorite Danielle--edit--ism---"can you just put it in so I can just see what it looks like??"

ooh they hate when I say that!!!

The editing process is like asking some guy who is a friend move heavy furniture around in your house and then after he is done--you change your mind  ----and then you do that over and over again for hours on end----{not such a pretty picture right?}

You can only imagine how much the guys -Poor Alvin and Dave ----abolutely love to do that!!!! :)

{oh well--she says as she batts her eyes}

Basically I have driven them crazy and yet--we all smile and laugh at the end of the day!!

{maybe their crazy smile means they are really plotting to do me in???}  :):):)

Anyway my pupils will not dilate--but finally-- finally--I got the 3 Lourdes segments on the air--

{tomorrow it part 3--if you missed them you can check them out on our website}

They aired Tuesday of this week--Wednesday and today,Thursday and then on Friday I am airing a  half hour show----but I am still working on it!!  aaaah!

[more furniture moving!!!}

We decided to take all the magical moments and put them together for another segment--so the show will consist of four segments--

Anyway I have to go home so I can come back here--{it's almost 11 and I have to be back here at 6:30} but I just wanted to say check out my other blogs on Lourdes ---they are below the Pretty Planet blog--and I have lots of great pictures!!

I am so tired but I truly hope the segments will do justice in some little way to this AWESOME story!!

Thanks to all of you for your ongoing support!!

THIS PRETTY PLANET

By Danielle Campbell

"This pretty planet spinning through space--your garden --your harbor--your holy place!"

Gpn2000001138

Those are words from a beautiful Tom Chapin song that I have sung to my children for as long as I can remember--

I love that song--If only we could always treat our planet as our holy place!

Base_image
{The entire album is dedicated to environmental issues, aimed of course at our children. An impressive list of musical guests rounds out the credits and only adds to Tom Chapin's natural appeal.
http://kidsmusic.about.com/od/cdreview1/fr/uc_prettyplanet.htm}

This is my Earth Day wish list:

I wish I could drive a bio-diesel car with fuel I make in my garage--

I wish I had solar and geothermal heating and my home was completely off the grid--

I wish that everything I buy wasn't wrapped in plastic, placed in plastic and then thrown out in plastic.

{Plastic is made with fossil fuels}

I wish all the food I gave my children, was pure, clean,  free of pesticides, chemicals, and toxin residues.

OK you get the point--

Yes, there are times I say--"whats the use!"

But most times I am a planet lover--

Pia02970

I do what I can do--

I recycle--{please don't tell me "it doesn't matter--they throw all the stuff in the same pile anyway"--can someone get to the bottom of that!!!!!}

Acclaim_images_comp_026906090413480

I buy earth friendly products, organic food, drive a small car, make my kids crazy about what "footprint" they will leave on the planet.

Because I am a busy mother of four--I have found some quick, easy ways to stay on top of the green movement.

There are a few websites that help--one I have found offers some good easy ways to implement "green" living--

Often they email you a tip for the day--

The other day I got this from Idealbite.com:

http://www.idealbite.com/

Logo

Are all laundry products as clean as they seem?

The Bite
We wish. Many contain ingredients you don't usually want anywhere near your personal affairs (animal tallow, anyone?). Try our fave goods to keep your clothes - not to mention your eco-reputation - as clean as a whistle.

The Benefits

  • Safety first. In the United States, 25,000-plus kids "are exposed to" (that's EPA code for "have accidents involving") chlorine bleach each year.
  • Saving oil. If every U.S. household replaces one box of 48-oz, petroleum-based powder laundry detergent with a vegetable-based one, we'll save enough oil to heat and cool 5,300 homes for a year.
  • Avoiding irritation. Fragrances and harsh solvents like ammonia contained in some typical detergents and fabric softeners can trigger your allergies and asthma, and cause skin irritation.
  • Scents you'll wanna sniff. Not reeking of chlorine is always a plus.

Wanna Try?
Bleach

  • Ecover Bleach - make your whites even brighter with this nonchlorine bleach ($5/14 oz).

Detergent

Dryer Sheets

  • Shaklee Get Clean Dryer Sheets - biodegradable and made with none of the vegetarian-unfriendly animal tallow found in regular dryer sheets ($10/80 sheets).

Fabric Softener

  • Mrs. Meyer's Fabric Softener - essential oils (instead of tallow) fluff your fabrics right nice; in four scents, here in sweet geranium ($8/32 oz).

I have to say this point really hit me:

Saving oil. If every U.S. household replaces one box of 48-oz, petroleum-based powder laundry detergent with a vegetable-based one, we'll save enough oil to heat and cool 5,300 homes for a year.

L3

I always buy earth friendly, soaps shampoos, dish detergent, laundry soap etc--you can research on the web how bad conventional products are for your health and the earth's water source---

Dishapri

Sometimes for a friend's birthday--I give them a big basket of earth friendly cleaning products, soaps shampoos, dish washing liquid, laundry soap, etc--it's my little way of spreading the message, helping to make change.

{ I am sure they would prefer I take them out to dinner than give them my "Earth Friendly" basket of cheer!! }

http://www.ecos.com/

Here are some other earth day tips on recycling:

Logo_2

  • Earth911 - local listings of where you can recycle anything under the sun.
  • You don't need to remove labels from cans and bottles, but you do need to remove plastic caps (and throw them away).
  • Your recyclables don't need to be spotless - just not moldy or full of food. Save water - don't rinse 'til clean.

Glass

  • Unbroken bottles are easier for workers to sort than broken ones.

Metal

  • Most containers, such as tins and cans, and aluminum foil.

Paper

  • Newspapers, magazines, photocopies, shoe boxes, envelopes (including ones with glassine windows).

Plastic

  • Plastics #1-#2 – recyclable in most areas. Usually found in 2-liter and detergent bottles, milk jugs and food containers.
  • Plastics #3-#7 – more difficult to recycle, they are found in Styrofoam, pipes, shrink wrap, padded envelopes, trash liners and more. Check with your local facility to see if it recycles these plastics.
  • Yogurt Cups - recyclable in most areas, especially the #2 plastic kind.
  • Grocery Bags - reuse them first! You usually can't recycle them curbside, but some supermarkets have recycling bins in-store. Try to avoid them altogether by bringing your own bag to the store.

Whale2

I'm a planet nerd, earthy crunchy, recycle freak--whatever-- but I know its the only way right now I can make a difference--{thats until I get a mega raise and then I can retro-fit my car and my home so I can take advantage of  all that free solar energy!!--then I want to start a company that helps communities go solar and bio diesel and get all of us to stop using fossil fuels!!! and then.....}

A girl can dream, right!!!!

And if you read this far then you will know that when I was 10-- I entered a hat contest in my town--

All the girls had hats with beautiful roses and bows--I made a "garbage hat" made of trash I found in our town's park--I did it as a statement about the need to recycle and care for the planet!

There are no pictures of this hat, but just imagine cigarette butts, soda cans, newspapers, glued onto a used paper plate--and tied on with an old shoe lace--

{good lord who are her parents??}

{ I think I won 2 or 3rd place}

I truly was a tree hugger way back when!!

NO EMMY FOR ME

By Danielle Campbell

I did not win the Emmy for my series on Nicaragua---
Yes-- I was disappointed--
Img_0316Fotosext_002_3

Fotosext_007_1

Like last year,--

when I was nominated for a wonderful story about the Central Islip High School Choir,
I got all gussied up, hair done, high hopes---
But it was a no go--

Img_0461 {me with my kids gussied up}

I gave both those stories my everything and anything that I possibly could--but the Emmy remained elusive.

{The Central Islip Story did go on to win some other prestigious awards and that was exciting.}

But today, after a week of contemplating what it means to be a journalist--after a week of wrestling with what constitutes a good "news" story---after a week of losing all faith in the blurred term--journalism.
{ I guess I took harder that I thought--} --I got a phone call.

It was from News 12 Long Island's Virginia Huie, my dear colleague, a true journalist--a woman who has won countless awards for her beautiful, skillful, artistic story telling--a woman who is regarded as one of the best journalists in the nation.
Lourds_3

Virginia called me and said are you sitting down--I said oh no --oh no--what happened??
She laughed and said--"nothing silly except you have just won --not one, but two Edward R. Murrow Awards for Nicaragua"
"What? What?"
"Yes you won for News series and for writing!"

A few months earlier I had called her with the AMAZING news that she had been nominated for 5 Emmy's ----{like every year! :) check out her blog!}

She was so pleased that she could call me with this great news--especially since she knew I was struggling with the whole issue of what constitutes important journalism.

I have to say I am excited!!!!!--I am excited for us!----for my talented cameraman Keith Feldman who shot in  100 degree temperatures to bring that story alive with sound and pictures--

Lourds_3_2

{Keith with some down time--riding a horse in Nicaragua}

And I am equally excited for Brian Endres--my editor.
{as soon as I snap of picture of him, I will post it :)}

Brian, also a fantastic cameraman--edited Nicaragua with me--we spent  a week in a dark room --hours and hours---taking my written word and Keith's pictures --and somehow--we married them.
The process is hard to explain--there is a certain magic that happens in the editing bay--
beautiful pictures and carefully chosen words mix and mingle--until somehow it becomes  a journalistic dance ----a dance that we had hoped would delight, inspire and move our viewers.

Nic3
Nic4_2 Fotosext_008_3_2

Fotosext_003_1

Brian and Keith, thank you for your integrity and your commitment, without the two of you, this would not be.

And while I am saying thanks--I must thank my News Director Pat Dolan---
Pat empowers journalism--despite what others may advise, ---Pat stays true to his journalism ideals.
Pat has vision--and in my opinion, he has courage.
Pat has the courage to say yes to important life giving stories --stories that so many others would have said no to.

Thank you News 12 for the opportunity to do stories, countless wonderful stories--- that bring about change, not only in our lives--but in our hearts.

Now I must write about the miracle of Lourdes--

Air Date For Lourdes!!

Img_0023

I just received the air dates for my story on Steven McDonald traveling to Lourdes with Handicapped children from LI, NJ, Conn, and Pennslyvania.

Img_0020

------------------------------------------------------------------

Danielle's Lourdes series will air April 29th, 30th, and May 1st.

It will be a 3-part series beginning at 8 am each day.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Now I have to decide what 9 minutes of video out of the 12 hours that we shot--will make it on my story--

We have so much beautiful video, courtesy of my cameraman Dave Liebowitz--{Liebo}

It is very difficult because the boss's all have an idea of what YOU the viewers want to see, hear, experience.--

"focus on the handicapped children,the viewers will want to know what happens to them!" "show them the miracles!"  "were there any miracles?" hmmmm---

It's true--- --should the piece focus on Steven McDonald and all the lives he has touched??--What about the handicapped kids who are amazing and spiritual?---Then there is the story of Lourdes--the setting where this journey took place--and all the beauty, awe, wonder and fun we had there!--

How do I start??--How do I end??--

Img_0024 I guess my gut feeling is that the story will write itself--I mean I really don't have to try--every bit of it  is amazing--- Like when Liz ,who has severe CP, tells me through her personal communicator that she comes to Lourdes because this is where she finds "peace"-- Later during the inteview I ask her if she wants to be healed and she tells me, as she types arduously on her communicator--- "I am already healed--I accept and love who I am" {there's your miracle!!!}

Doing this story in 3----2 minute versions seems impossible--maybe they will give me 2 and a half minutes??--I will have to beg for that---

Blogging about it is much easier!    ;)

April 04, 2008

Prayers For You!

Just a short note--

I'm not strictly religious ---I strive to be spiritual----and would probably like to be more Native American like---

With that said--I just wanted family, friends, viewers and readers to know--I prayed at the Lourdes Grotto for anyone who was part of my life--- in anyway.

So if you are in need of special prayers--positive thoughts--energy----whatever it is called when one asks for good things for others--I did that for you.

I thought I should tell you that.

Check out this picture!

By Danielle Campbell

I am home sick--sick as I have ever been--
We have been home from Lourdes, France since Sunday--and I have been in bed with the flu!

Despite my aching body, throbbing head and sore throat--I still have to share something with all of you who are interested in my trip.

Img_0736

It is a picture that was taken by Ralph--Ralph is Steven McDonald's driver--he is one of the NYPD officers assigned to care for Steven.

Img_0671

However on this trip he was not working--he was not paid--he wanted to be there.
Ralph is a handsome, urbanite, 30 something guy, with no kids--you would not call him a "holy roller".
And yet he had such pure joy, pure love for Lourdes and the children.

Img_0653

We traveled with the American Special Children's Pilgrimage--this group brings handicapped children to Lourdes and Bernadette's spring every year during Easter week.

Img_0576 Img_0610 Img_0649

Since I am so sick--I am going to make this short---
Last year during the trip Ralph took a picture that blew him away--in his words--"freaked" him out.
He didn't show anyone because he felt people would think he had lost it---

One night however he did share this picture with me --and I have to tell you it gave me instant goose bumps!
{Ralph told me I can share his story and that I could post this picture on my blog }

The picture is taken at night, during the candle light procession---facing a very large statue of Mary.

I tried to take a few pictures in that very spot during the candle light procession but it is very difficult because everyone is moving and the picture comes out blurry.

Here are the shots he took last year:

He then takes a third picture and an image appears:

If you click on the picture you will see the image more clearly--it looks like Saint Bernadette kneeling and reaching out--

When he showed it to me--as I said it gave me the chills---

And the strange thing is Ralph works in a special unit called TARU--their job is to check out surveillance video and do all kinds of undercover work--he knows how to look at a video/picture and decipher what would cause an image like that.

He told me in his matter of fact way--he can't explain it.

This year he was walking around and a large poster caught his eye--when he looked at it he couldn't believe what he saw---

Lourds_08

This poster is celebrating the jubilee of Lourdes--it has been 150 years since the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to Saint Bernadette.

The odd thing is--like Ralph's image--Bernadette is reaching out---
Most artist impressions of Bernadette show her kneeling and her hands in prayer---

For Ralph, it was confirmation that the image he caught on camera was Saint Bernadette.

Rise and Shine

It has not stopped raining in Lourdes. Img_0514
We are soaked to the bone.

But I think that maybe a good thing.
Lourdes is all about the water--

Img_0532The story is Bernadette, a poor child who could not read or write--was digging around in the town garbage dump looking for bones and rags and some firewood---this is the short version--but at one point the Blessed Virgin appears to her and says--go dig over there--and wash your face---typical mother don't you think?

Bernadette's face was very dirty, after all she was in a dump---and I have been to a few garbage dumps so I know how dirty you can get--

I love that story--especially this week here in Lourdes--we were all dirty --muddy--wet ---
good thing Bernadette dug up that spring!

Bernadette reminds so much of the children who have come to Lourdes this week--

5 thousand handicapped children from all over the world--washed and bathed in Bernadette's spring.

Bernadette was not taken seriously when she told her family and her priest about the vision she had seen.

It was only when she revealed that the beautiful lady called herself the Immaculate Conception--did anyone take notice.

That is what I have done here in Lourdes--I have taken notice--- Img_0676_2Img_0556

The children here have made me so aware ---they are spontaneously joyful, loving, caring, ---they cry when they are sad--they sing their hearts out ---and dance with abandon---they also touch lives all around them----Img_0579everything they do is from the heart--everything they do is pure---

Pure like the mountain water from Bernadette's spring------Img_0652

All week we have been singing the song Rise and Shine!

It truly the theme song for the entire pilgrimage--and a few verses have really--well ---made us laugh!

The song is all about the Ark, and raining for forty days and God says get those children out of the muddy muddy---

That is the end of,
The end of my story, story
That is the end of,
The end of my story, story
Everything is hunky dory, dory
Children of the Lord

Rise and shine
And give God the glory, glory
Rise and shine
And give God the glory, glory
Rise and shine
And give God the glory, glory
Children of the Lord

And so despite everything--despite it all-----

Those miraculous kids made all of us--Rise and Shine!Img_0613 Img_0565
