I fell asleep Saturday night listening to what sounded like ocean waves crashing against the side of my balcony.
Sunday morning arrived with the constant sound of sirens as emergency crews assess all the damage from the March 13th wind/rain storm.
Trees and branches are down everywhere.
These pictures were sent to me by the Fairfield Fire Department. They say that from 8:00 am Saturday morning through that night, first responders were sent on more than 140 calls. (Keep in mind, that is just Fairfield.)
The above picture is a tree on a home on Lynwood Avenue.
Below, firefighters say they had to cut away the tree that fell on this SUV on Wakeman Road. They then had to use hydraulic tools and chains to lift the steering column and dashboard so they could free the person inside who was hurt and taken to the hospital.
The next picture is a tree that fell across an SUV on the Old Post Road.
A voluntary evacuation was in place Saturday night for homes along the Fairfield shoreline. An emergency shelter was set up at Roger Ludlowe High School.
I was tucked in listening to the storm. However, many of my friends out in southwestern Connecticut let me know about all the closed roads. One said it was nothing but road blocks between Greenwich and Stamford.
Another texted me after driving home, "Like a freakin WARZONE in Westport and Norwalk! Huge trees, one after another down. Power lines too- help."
When I noticed the storm picking up speed, I updated Facebook to say, 'It's raining sideways."
It was, the wind was so strong it was blowing the rain. My morning weather pal Paul Piorek commented at 3:55pm, "We still have power, despite a 52-mile-an-hour wind gust, 1.11" of rain, and a barometric pressure of 29.51 inches. Wilton has 1.73" of rain thus far.
Paul went on:
"Incredibly, today is the anniversary of the March 13, 1993, "Storm of the Century," which brought over a foot-and-a-half of snow, and the March 13, 1990, record high temperature of 84 degrees at Sikorsky Memorial Airport. That was a record high for the date, month, and Winter! What is it about March 13?"
Hopefully everyone is finding a better day in March 14th and the rest of the month! See you Monday morning!
