Here's a little something from my guest blogger...Kim Saltmarsh is interning with me for the summer semester.
Enjoy...and no...I didn't pay her to say nice things about me or News 12 Long Island...though I did consider it!

Intern. It often has a negative connotation to it. Some people refer to it as the "gopher" while others find that the word "non-existent" suffices. Well, I am here to tell you that as Shari Einhorn's intern at News 12, I am neither a gopher nor non-existent. I like to think of the intern as a "sponge."
As a "sponge," I simply absorb everything that I possibly can at every opportunity I can do so at. The reporter internship at News 12 means I am assigned to a reporter who I observe and assist on the assigned days. I am assigned to Shari and that is good news for me because just by observing, I have already sharpened both my writing and reporting skills.
You see, I have wanted to be a reporter from the time I learned to talk. It is my passion and my dream, and Shari respects that passion by giving me tips out in the field. Not only do I observe her, but I have also put those observations into actions by doing my own stand-ups and packages that I can add to my resume tape. The more work I have to choose from, the better my reel will be, and as an aspiring reporter entering her senior year at Hofstra University, I want my tape to be the best it can be.
A News 12 internship is not about stapling papers or making photo copies. It's about utilizing the resources right in front of you and watching the professionals, like Shari, do what they do best.
