For many people who live in poverty, America is the place for opportunity. That's what Marcello Lucero believed. So, 16-years ago he left Ecuador and moved to the United States.
Saturday night the 37-year old was stabbed to death, police say, because of the color of his skin. They say it was a hate crime.
Friends and relatives now mourn for a man who they say was a kind, giving, hard worker, who would always be there if you needed help. He didn't have much. He lived on the top floor of a home in Patchogue. He worked at odd jobs and most recently at a dry cleaner. But he always had enough money to send some home to his mother in Ecuador.
He found his own American Dream here on Long Island, only to have it taken away by a knife attack on a dark street. That night, he was headed to a friend's house to do something all American: watch a movie. Instead, his life was tragically cut short.
