This weekend I went Christmas shopping with my 7-year-old niece Jenna.(That's her on the right with a cake I made for her birthday.)
She noticed a sign above a Salvation Army kettle which said "Do The Most Good." She asked me what that meant. It was the perfect opportunity for me to tell her about the true meaning of the holidays. I explained to her there are many children who aren't has fortunate as she is. They don't have a nice house, food on the table and all the toys they wish for. I told her it's better to give than receive.
A homemade gift or time spent with someone is far more valuable than anything money can buy. In these economic hardtimes every one of us can "Do The Most Good" by giving a little of ourselves. Donate food and clothing. Volunteer to help those in need. Showing a little bit of heart can make a big difference. I think my niece is beginning to understand. When we returned home she created a homemade card to thank me for all the things I did for her this past weekend.
A heartfelt thank you from her. Something I will treasure always.
