The difference between then and now is that Lincoln (like my personal hero Jackson before him) was warning AGAINST giving power and control to these large companies, especially the banks. Today, the trend has reversed, and Obama (and Bush before him, and Clinton before him...) have been shoveling influence AT the banks.

Andrew Jackson said of the Second Bank of the United States (the predecessor to the Federal Reserve), that it was "beyond question that this great and powerful institution had been actively engaged in attempting to influence the elections of the public officers by means of its money." He then cancelled its charter rather than allowing it to expire.

Lincoln (despite his many flaws, such as stomping all over the Bill of Rights during his Presidency) issued his Greenbacks to keep the banks from gaining control over the Union.

Today, our Presidents put investment bankers in charge of the Treasury and give trillions of taxpayer dollars to the banks to loan back to us at interest!

There's a reason we have less respect for them today. They stopped living up to it, for the most part.
